Reports this week from the website Re/Code suggest Nokia is getting ready to unveil a virtual reality device next week at an event in Los Angeles. The new product from Nokia would be its first major hardware launch since being acquired by Microsoft nearly two years ago.
There are no details yet on what sort of device they would be launching, but industry insiders are expecting big news from the Finnish tech company if they are going to compete with the growing list of companies that already announced virtual reality projects, including industry giants Sony, HTC, Microsoft, Samsung and Facebook
Earlier this month, Nokia confirmed that it was entering the smartphone business and that it is seeking a partner, but that the company would not be able to produce any Nokia branded phone until late 2016, just in time to join the virtual reality stampede.
If the reports are accurate and Nokia does enter the virtual reality space, it will be joining the ever increasing list of companies preparing to compete in what is expected to be a ‘virtual goldrush’ leading up to Christmas 2016.
Nokia Technologies was contacted regarding the story, but declined to make a statement, saying they did not comment on ‘rumours’
